OpenAI launches GPT-5 – A new milestone in the era of artificial intelligence

In the early hours of August 8 (Vietnam time), OpenAI officially announced GPT-5, the latest version of its large language model (LLM) series - marking the first change in version number since GPT-4 was released more than two years ago. This represents an important milestone not only for OpenAI, but for the entire AI industry, as GPT-5 is expected to deliver interactions and information processing that are closer to human capabilities than ever before.

GPT-5 has now been rolled out to all 700 million ChatGPT users worldwide. The standard version will completely replace GPT-4 in the ChatGPT application for both free and paid users (according to Reuters).

Wired, the well-known U.S. technology news outlet, describes GPT-5 as a “comprehensive” upgrade in terms of intelligence, response speed and stability. The model significantly reduces hallucination and offers a smoother, more natural conversational experience. Users will notice a clear difference in complex reasoning tasks such as coding, problem solving and scientific analysis.

CEO Sam Altman compared this leap to “the moment the iPhone switched to a Retina display” - a step change that anyone could immediately recognize when experiencing it. He emphasized: “For the first time, it will feel like you’re speaking with a PhD-level expert on any topic.”

A key highlight of GPT-5 is the Safe Completions feature - a new mechanism that enables the model to respond to sensitive or potentially risky questions in a safer and more responsible manner.

For example, if someone asks about the amount of energy required to burn a specific material, GPT-5 will still provide scientifically relevant information, but in a way that cannot be abused for harmful purposes. Alex Beutel, Head of Safety at OpenAI, explained: “Not every difficult question is asked with bad intentions. Safe Completions ensures that users receive helpful answers within a safe boundary.”

The launch of GPT-5 is not simply a technical upgrade - it is also a statement of OpenAI’s long-term strategy to develop AI that is safe, powerful and more human-like. With improvements in speed, accuracy and the ability to handle complex situations, GPT-5 promises to enable a wide range of new practical applications, from education and scientific research to business support. As artificial intelligence continues to expand into every sector, GPT-5 can be seen as a significant milestone - laying the foundation for the next generation of AI: smarter, more human-centered and more trustworthy.
