Vietnam sets target to develop a patent map for 11 strategic technology groups
On the morning of September 25, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng welcomed Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), during his visit to Vietnam at the invitation of the Ministry of Science and Technology. This meeting not only marked a step forward in the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and WIPO but also reflected Vietnam’s commitment to promoting innovation and intellectual property in order to achieve sustainable development goals.
Aiming to become a high-income country
At the meeting, Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng shared Vietnam’s development strategy, emphasizing that the country is entering a new stage of development with the goal of becoming a high-income nation, based on three key pillars: science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation. He stated that, in this strategy, innovation will serve as the core factor, helping Vietnam increase competitiveness and integrate deeply into the global economy.
Vietnam has identified the goal of “innovation for all,” encouraging all citizens to participate in entrepreneurship and business activities, while simultaneously developing digital technology, science and technology, and creativity. To achieve this, Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng proposed that WIPO support Vietnam in creating a patent map for 11 strategic technology groups recognized by the Government, including key fields such as information technology, artificial intelligence, and green technology.
Patent map – an important step for sustainable development
According to Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, developing a patent map will help Vietnam master cutting-edge technologies, promote research and development (R&D), and thereby contribute significantly to building a foundation for a creative economy. These strategic technology groups will not only enhance Vietnam’s competitiveness but also contribute to improving quality of life and protecting the environment.
In addition to the patent map, the Minister also requested WIPO’s support in upgrading Vietnam’s digital platform for intellectual property management. The goal is to build a system that both meets international standards and aligns with Vietnam’s specific conditions. Once completed, this system will not only strengthen domestic intellectual property management but can also be shared with other countries, contributing to the overall development of the international community.
Vietnam – a model for developing countries
Mr. Daren Tang, WIPO Director General, congratulated Vietnam on its impressive achievements in the Global Innovation Index (GII), while stressing that Vietnam is a typical role model for developing countries. He noted that with its remarkable growth in innovation, Vietnam has demonstrated that intellectual property and creativity can succeed even in emerging economies.
He also shared that Vietnam’s initiative in implementing the provincial-level GII has attracted interest from countries such as India, Cuba, and Brazil. This model is creating a wave of innovation in developing nations, driving investments in research and development.
Comprehensive cooperation between WIPO and the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam
Also during the meeting, under the witness of Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam and WIPO signed a memorandum of understanding on comprehensive cooperation. This agreement not only opens up opportunities for long-term collaboration in intellectual property but also establishes a solid foundation for developing the intellectual property system and promoting innovation in Vietnam.
The development of a patent map for strategic technologies and the enhancement of intellectual property management capacity will serve as an important stepping stone for Vietnam to achieve its goal of becoming a high-income country. Close cooperation between Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology and WIPO will be a key factor in promoting the creative economy and contributing to the overall development of the international community.
